I have a 4 yr old Golden Retriever that I got as a pup (6 wk) with the intent of using him for hunting. Problem is when he hears a gun go off he heads back to the truck. Doesn't have to be me shooting, just in the area.

Is there a way to help him get through this?

My Golden was the same way when he was young if he even saw a gun he would take off. He loves chasing Squirrels when we are camping so I brought a pellet gun it did not make noise and he made the connection while watching from a distance as they fell out of the tree.
Within a day he was right by my side wagging his tail and waiting for me to get him another one. four years later he is in the pit with me every hunt.

You really need to follow a program. I wouldn't hunt with dog until you have a program in place. Never to late to start one.

I have always banged a couple pans together during feeding time. Feed the dog in another room and bang a couple pans together as loud as you can. This will introduce the dog a loud bang, similar sound to a shot gun sound. Keep doing this for a week. Then start getting closer to room banging away. Before you know it. You can bang pans together next to the dog during feeding time. This will help you, once you get back in the field with your partner.
